NORWICH, CT- With the holidays quickly approaching, the need for food donations increases dramatically. The Defenders got into the holiday spirit as more than 300 cases of food were shared with the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and the United Way.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul was founded in 1833 by the Roman Catholic Church in Paris, France. The Society has since grown to nearly one million members worldwide servicing the needy in 132 countries. Locally, Saint Vincent de Paul operates in downtown Norwich where dozens of volunteers run a soup kitchen.

"We are grateful to the SVDP Society for their assistance in distributing this food," commented Defenders' General Manager Charlie Dowd. "There is a need in the community now and throughout the year that will only worsen as the economy contracts. We are thankful for the support that our fans bestow on us and we appreciate the opportunity to help."

The United Way is a non-profit organization that has been helping the less privileged for more than 100 years. With 69 locations in New London County, over 11,000 people benefit from the United Way's donations locally.

"It's exciting to help others in need," said Defenders' Director of Concessions and Merchandise Shannon Johnson. "The United Way is a strong force in New London County and we are proud to assist their noble cause."

More than $8,000 worth of food was donated between the two organizations. It took several truckloads to transport the abundance of food from Dodd Stadium to its final location.
