Florida Fire Frogs News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL: 21-year-old RHP Jasseel De La Cruz was electric in his Advanced-A debut, helping the Florida Fire Frogs hold off the St. Lucie Mets, 3-2, and ending a five-game losing skid.
De La Cruz (1-0) turned in six fantastic frames of one-run ball, surrendering just two hits, a walk, and recording six strikeouts. He set the Mets down in order in four of his six innings on the mound.
Consecutive singles and a wild pitch from the Florida righty put him in a tough spot in the second. Matt Winaker was able to hit a sacrifice fly to left, plating Cortes to give St. Lucie the lead, 1-0.
The Mets lost for the first time this year when scoring the first run of a contest (13-1).
The Fire Frogs offense routinely scattered hits throughout the game, but they finally broke through on the scoreboard in the fifth. Isranel Wilson blasted a lead-off home-run to right off RHP Kyle Wilson to get Florida on the scoreboard. Back-to-back singles from Riley Unroe and Riley Delgado pushed across the go-ahead run, 2-1 Fire Frogs.
Kyle Wilson (1-3) scattered seven hits, two walks, and two earned runs in four innings of work.
Florida got an insurance tally in the sixth to make it 3-1. Brett Langhorne tripled and was brought in by Shean Michel's sacrifice fly.
The Mets made it interesting in the eighth, cutting the Florida lead to 3-2. Jacob Zanon doubled home Luis Carpio for the tally.
The bullpen stood tall behind De La Cruz. RHP Walter Borkovich earned a hold, allowing just two hits and an earned run across two frames. RHP Brandon White slammed the door in the ninth for his first save of 2019.
For the second straight day a Florida Fire Frog had a four-hit performance. William Contreras went 4-4 with two doubles, two singles, and a walk. Delgado had three singles. Langhorne reached three times and had two hits.
NEXT UP: After a league-wide off day on Monday, the Fire Frogs begin a six-game home stand with the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Tuesday evening at the Pond. LHP Hayden Deal (1-1, 1.50 ERA) will fire his first pitch at 6:00 pm.
