Portland Thunder News Release
PORTLAND - The Portland Thunder have acquired DB Dwight McLean from the Las Vegas Outlaws, announced head coach Mike Hohensee Wednesday afternoon.
"This will certainly be a shot in the arm for our young secondary," Hohensee said. "It is great to have Dwight McLean back in Portland."
McLean was placed on recallable reassignment on May 26th by Las Vegas. By rule, teams have a 48 hour window to return players to the roster from this designation before they then become free agents. A member of the Thunder's inaugural roster in 2014, McLean returns to Portland after appearing in eight games for the Outlaws, tallying 30 tackles, seven pass break-ups, and two turnovers (1 INT, 1 FF).
"He's a great kid, and a very good player," stated special teams coordinator Lee Johnson, who coached Dwight as a member of the San Antonio Talons in 2012. "Dwight played well for me in San Antonio, and he is a guy we know can play all four defensive back positions."
McLean is in his fifth season of AFL experience, returning to the Portland Thunder after starting the 2015 season with the Las Vegas Outlaws. Dwight recorded 67.0 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 16 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and three interceptions during the Thunder's inaugural season in 2014. McLean appeared in 17 games for the Thunder last season, starting in 16 of those appearances. Prior to the Thunder, McLean played with New Orleans, San Antonio, Arizona, and San Jose.
McLean initially played collegiate football for Fullerton College, a junior college, where he started 21 consecutive games in his time there. He recorded a total of 94 tackles and six interceptions before being recruited to join the Purdue Boilermakers. Scout.com selected McLean to the SoCal All-Combine team for his performance on the junior college level. At Purdue, in his first season he appeared in all 12 games, starting in six of them. His second and final season at Purdue he appeared in all 12 games again, primarily as a starter. He finished his career at Purdue with 62 tackles, four pass breakups, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery.
The Thunder have placed DB Allen Chapman on injured reserve. Chapman was originally placed on inactive reserve on May 11th with a lower body injury. DB De'Mon Glanton has also been moved to inactive reserve.
