Day One Of Rookie Camp In The Books
August 26, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The opening day of Rookie Camp is over at Brandon Wheat Kings' Training Camp at Westman Place.
After back to back practices in the morning, Team Black took on Team Gold Wednesday night, with the Blacks scoring a dramatic 3-2 victory on Kyle Krzyzanik's goal with just 47 seconds remaining in sudden death overtime.
A member of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Neepawa Natives last season, the 6'2" 181 lb. defenceman deflected a Lyrik Friesen shot past netminder Dalyn Flette, spoiling an excellent goaltending battle between the former Edmonton Oil King and 16-year old rookie Liam Liston.
Former AAA Midget Wheat King Wheaton King and defenceman Alexander Kampen also scored for the winners, while Dylan Kelly and Corey Petrach replied for the Golds, who battled back from a 2-0 deficit to force the extra session.
The two teams will face off again Thursday morning at 9, with the club's Rookie Intrasquad Game scheduled to start at 6 tomorrow night. Following Thursday's game, a number of cuts will be made as the team gets set for the start of Main Camp on Friday.
Camp will conclude Sunday afternoon with the Annual Black White Intrasquad Game, with puck drop at 2 p.m. The Wheat Kings will kick off their 4-game pre-season schedule on Friday, September 4th with a game against the visiting Regina Pats.
With the Wheat Kings hosting the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup in May, this week's camp promises to be a good one says Brandon coach and general manager Kelly McCrimmon.
"I think we're expecting a competitive camp based on what's expected for our team this season," McCrimmon told the Brandon Sun's Rob Henderson earlier this week. "I think it puts the onus on veteran players to be very competive right through training camp. And for first year players, we think we've got the potential of having a real good rookie class on our team this year and they need to work to help us make our decisions. A lot of times as it goes along the players make the decisions for you."
Among the players skating in this week's Rookie Camp is 15-year old defenceman Eric Roy, the Wheat Kings' first pick in this year's Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. Others include former Winnipeg Saint Jordan DePape and Portage Terrier Brenden Walker, both 17, who finished 1-2 in MJHL Rookie Scoring last winter.
