Dawson, Doyle and Duch chase single season scoring records

April 9, 2009 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release

Boston Blazers forward Dan Dawson and San Jose Stealth forwards Colin Doyle and Rhys Duch have been three of the most exciting players to watch throughout the National Lacrosse League's 2009 season. In addition to the championship aspirations they have for their teams, they are each within range of potentially breaking some of the league's single season scoring records with just two weekends of games remaining in the regular season.

Doyle has scored 32 goals and 67 assists for a total of 99 points in 14 games played this season. With two games remaining, he is only four assists shy of the single season record of 71. The record was set by Josh Sanderson in 2005 while he played for the Toronto Rock. In that same season, Doyle tallied 69 assists, the second-highest total of all time.

Doyle is on pace to pass the mark, but he's not alone. Dan Dawson is having a standout season of his own (26 goals, 66 assists for 92 points). Dawson is right behind Doyle with 66 assists in 14 games, with two regular season games remaining. Both are likely to pass the current record of 71. Doyle and the Stealth play at Colorado (Saturday, 9pm ET), while Dawson and the Blazers host Rochester (Saturday, 7:30pm ET).

Doyle is also making a run at the record for points in a regular season. The record currently belongs to John Tavares. The Buffalo Bandits forward scored 51 goals and 64 assists for a record 115 points during the 2001 regular season. Doyle has a league-leading 99 points with two games remaining.

Rhys Duch is having a sensational rookie season. The Stealth forward has scored 29 goals and 49 assists for 78 points through 14 games. With two regular season games remaining, Duch is only four points away from the league's rookie scoring record of 82 points. The rookie record was set by Colorado Mammoth forward Gavin Prout in 2002. Prout scored 30 goals and 52 assists that season, while playing for the New York Saints franchise. Duch has an opportunity to tie or break the record when San Jose faces Prout and the Mammoth on Saturday at Pepsi Center in Denver, 9pm ET. Duch was drafted out of SUNY-Stony Brook (Long Island, NY) by San Jose with the third overall selection in the 2008 Entry Draft

With playoff berths on the line and scoring records in danger of falling, it's going to be another exciting weekend of play in the National Lacrosse League. Be sure to follow every game live online at the NLL Network at NLL.com. The San Jose-Colorado game will be televised on Altitude (DIRECTV 644/Dish Network 410), Saturday at 9pm ET.
