Dawn Staley To Carry Flag For Team USA
August 12, 2004 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
Charlotte Sting News Release
Charlotte Sting guard Dawn Staley will carry the American flag into Friday night's opening ceremony to begin the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Staley is competing in her third Olympics as a member of the U.S. Women's Senior National Team.
"I'm in total disbelief. Leading the U.S. delegation into the opening ceremony is a tremendous honor. I'll walk into the stadium as proud as can be," said Staley, who was revealed as the U.S. flagbearer in an interview with Katie Couric on The Today Show early this morning.
Staley was voted to the honor by fellow athletes. Captains of each individual sport nominate representatives and then vote on the nominees. Already a two-time gold medalist, Staley will lead the women's basketball team in their quest for a third straight gold medal beginning on Saturday vs. New Zealand.
