Hitter of the Week
GOOKIE DAWKINS â JACKSONVILLE SUNS Jacksonville Suns' infielder Gookie Dawkins was named the BC Powder Southern League Hitter of the Week. Dawkins hit .364 (8-for-22), drove in seven runs and scored three times. The shortstop smacked three home runs and had three multi-hit games. For the week, the 24-year-old had a .773 slugging percentage and a .364 on-base percentage. The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed Dawkins off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds in March. The former top prospect was originally selected by the Reds in the 2nd round of the June 1997 draft. He resides in Chappells, SC.
Pitcher of the Week
JULIO VILLALON â TENNESSEE SMOKIES
In a week that saw several outstanding pitching performances, Tennessee Smokies' pitcher Julio Villalon was honored as the BC Powder Southern League Pitcher of the Week after an impressive win against the Greenville Braves on June 22. The righthander handcuffed the Braves for eight innings, surrendering no runs on three hits while striking out three and walking two. The St. Louis Cardinals purchased Villalon from Independent Duluth-Superior in 2002. Villalon was originally signed by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as a non-drafted free agent. He resides in San Jose, Costa Rica.
