MARTHA'S VINEYARD, Mass. (Sunday, August 4, 2013). After struggling against the first place Martha's Vineyard Sharks (31-17) for most of the season, the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs (18-29) finally got their revenge by sweeping Sunday's doubleheader 4-3, 9-8.
The first game needed extra innings, but Tyler Mikrut (Southern Indiana) scored off an error in the top of the eighth to give the Dirt Dawgs the win.
Starting pitcher Michael Yerina (SCSU) powered the team to victory with his complete game performance. He allowed only three runs while scatting eight hits over eight innings. Yerina moves to 3-4 with the win.
Kevin Marciano (WNEC) led the Dirt Dawgs with two hits, while Nate Pajka (Bates) recorded the only two Wachusett RBIs.
The second game proved to be more of the same, with the Dirt Dawgs holding off the Sharks late rally to squeak out another one-run victory.
After trailing 5-0 for the first three frames, Wachusett used an eight-run fourth to propel them to the come from behind victory.
Michael Marshall (Bryant) was the winning pitcher for Wachusett; he allowed three earned runs, off seven hits, over four innings pitched, while striking out three. Marshall moves to 2-4 on the season.
David Montiverdi (Dowling) earned the save, his first of the season.
Josh Raymond (Judson) carried the Dirt Dawgs' offense in the second game, as he went for three hits and two RBIs.
Six other Wachusett batters recorded one RBI each in the game.
The Dirt Dawgs return home on Tuesday to take on the Pittsfield Suns. First pitch is at 6:35 PM.
