Long Beach Armada News Release
SAN DIEGO - An exciting game in front of a huge crowd created a feel good atmosphere at Tony Gwynn Stadium tonight. Bleary-eyed new acquisition Richard Quihuis-Bell, just off a plane, laid down a sacrifice bunt to move over Tony Garcia who had just walked. The throw to first by losing pitcher Brian Hoff (2-3) found no first baseman and rolled into right field. Garcia made the 270 foot trek to home and came in without a throw. Josh Rummonds, who struck out the side in the top of the tenth, was the first player to meet him at the plate.
For the second night in a row, the Long Beach Armada (11-10) got on the board first in San Diego. Adonis Harrison singled to right and Randall Shelley followed that up with a single. With two on, and one out Darrell Evans called for the double steal. Catcher Nick Guerra's throw ended up skipping by third baseman Victor Roldan and Long Beach took the lead 1-0. Jeff LaRue would single in Shelley to make it 2-0 Armada.
The Surf Dawgs answered right back in the bottom half of the first. Matthew Connolly led off with a single followed by an Adam Mandel single. After Seth Pietsch and Scott Goodman were retired, Nick Guerra hit a ball to first that Samone Peters couldn't handle allowing Connolly to score to make it 2-1 Long Beach. Tony Garcia doubled and drove in Mandel to tie it at two.
San Diego wasn't done scoring yet. In the fifth inning Mandel singled up the middle and moved to second when Pietsch was hit by a pitch. With two on Goodman hit into a fielder's choice to move Manel to third and set it up for Nick Guerra. Guerra, who went 2-for-5 a night after having his nine game hitting streak snapped, came through with some clutch hitting and gave the Surf Dawgs a 3-2 lead.
The lead wouldn't hold up. Chris George, who gave up eight hits and three runs (two earned) in seven innings, got into some trouble in the seventh when the Armada worked themselves into a first and third, one out situation. George got Jason Collette to strike out, but then gave up a game-tying single to Ryan Webb.
The game needed more than nine innings to be settled and the Dawgs (9-13) improved to 2-0 in extra-inning games. Brent Porciau (1-2) makes his return to the mound tomorrow with Aaron Wilson going on the DL. Paul Buchan (1-1), who got his only victory of the season against the Surf Dawgs, goes for the Armada. The game starts at 5:05 PST.
