Dawgs Past Train, Defeat Fullerton 4-3
July 21, 2006 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
After a three day break, the Surf Dawgs and Flyers were back in action tonight at Tony Gwynn Stadium and had themselves a good old fashioned duel, pitcher's duel that is. Both Fullerton's Jeremy Sugarman and San Diego's Steve Smyth pitched very well - Sugarman went six and one third innings and only allowed one unearned run on three hits; Smyth went seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts, but it was the never say die Surf Dawgs who won it in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Two GBL milestones were reached in the game. Peanut Williams set a new record for homeruns in the second inning with his 15th of the year. Seth Pietsch went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, extending his consecutive games on-base streak to 33 games, now the longest of the 2006 GBL season. The GBL record is 38 by Alex Arias last year with the Yuma Scorpions.
Former San Diego State catcher Joey Huskins, who signed with San Diego on Wednesday, got his first professional hit and it was a big one. With the Surf Dawgs trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Huskins drove in Nick Guerra to tie the game at one.
Fullerton however would take the lead back in the top of the seventh when Gabe Mayorga singled. He was moved over by an Adam Shorsher sacrifice bunt and he came around to score on a Toshi Sasa single to right. The Flyers would add one more in the eighth when E.J. Shanks threw a wild pitch while attempting to intentionally walk Jesse Schmidt that allowed Bret Levier to score to make it 3-1.
But the Surf Dawgs came back once again, this time in the bottom of the eighth. After Johnny Day was retired, Adam Mandel singled, Tony Garcia walked and that set the stage for Seth Pietsch. Pietsch singled through the right side and Mandel scored easily. The right fielder, Jesse Schmidt, tried to throw Garcia out at third but the throw was in the dirt and got past third baseman Levier. Garcia, who had slid into third, got up and scored on the play to tie the game at three. Pietsch was able to advance to third on the errant throw and San Diego had the table set for Scott Goodman. Goodman delivered; hitting a sacrifice fly to right to score Pietsch and San Diego took the lead for good 4-3.
Josh Rummonds faced four batters and struck out two in the ninth for his ninth save of the season, pulling him one behind the league leader, Scott Schneider of the Reno Silver Sox.
Seth Pietsch went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, extending his consecutive games on-base streak to 33 games, now the longest in the 2006 season.
San Diego (3-1, 19-25) will look to extend their three-game winning streak tomorrow versus these same Fullerton Flyers (2-3). Chris George (1-5) will take the hill for the Surf Dawgs and will be matched up against Craig Frydendall (2-4) of Fullerton. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. PT.
