Davis Reaches 100 K as Yankees Fall, 2-0

July 17, 2015 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Tampa Yankees News Release

TAMPA - Rookie Davis became the first pitcher in the Florida State League to reach 100 strikeouts as the Tampa Yankees (11-10, 45-46) offense struggled in a 2-0 loss to the Charlotte Stone Crabs (8-14, 53-39) on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Each team had only four batters reach base. The game finished in after an hour and 59 minutes, which ties the fastest nine-inning game played by Tampa this season (June 6th vs. Clearwater).

Davis (5-5) tallied nine strikeouts in a career-high eight innings of work. The right-hander yielded two runs on four hits and did not issue a walk.

After retiring the first nine batters in a row, Davis surrendered a leadoff single in the fourth to Andrew Velazquez. Pat Blair followed with a base hit, placing runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly by Willy Adames plated Velazquez. Blair was caught stealing before Mike Marjama crushed a solo home run over the wall in left.

Following the home run, Davis retired 13 of the next 14 batters he faced. RHP Giovanny Gallegos took the mound in the ninth and struck out two batters in a perfect relief inning.

A triple in the seventh by Dustin Fowler proved to be the only time a Yankee reached as far as second base.

RHP Hunter Wood (1-0) held the Yankees to three hits and a walk in seven scoreless innings, striking out four in his High-A debut with Charlotte. LHP Steve Ascher retired all six batters he faced, earning his first save of the season.

Carlos Beltran played his third and final rehab game with Tampa. The 38-year-old outfielder combined to go 3-for-7 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored while rehabbing a strained left oblique. Beltran will rejoin New York on Saturday.

The series wraps up on Saturday when LHP Dietrich Enns (0-0, 2.25 ERA) matches up against RHP Brent Honeywell (1-2, 6.97 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.

Saturday is Outdoors Night and the Christmas in July Motorcycle Toy Run, presented by Fabricated Products of Tampa and Full Throttle Magazine. Motorcyclists can receive free admission by participating in the toy run that benefits St. Joseph's Children's Hospital. Don't have a motorcycle? No problem - bring a toy donation to the box office for a discounted ticket. The first 300 fans will receive a surprise giveaway.
