Published on November 12, 2014 under Ontario Hockey League (OHL) News Release
Toronto, ON - The Ontario Hockey League in association with the Canadian Hockey League today announced the players that will serve as Captains and Alternates for the 2014 SUBWAYé Super Series games to be played in Peterborough on November 13 and in Kingston November 17.
Edmonton Oilers prospect Darnell Nurse of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds will captain Team OHL for both games against the Russian National Junior Team. The 19-year-old defenceman from Hamilton, ON, is playing in his fourth OHL season with the Greyhounds and is currently in his second season as team captain. The seventh overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft has 10 points in eight games this season and returns to Team OHL for the second straight season after competing in 2013 games played in Oshawa and Sudbury.
Colorado Avalanche prospect Chris Bigras of the Owen Sound Attack, New York Islanders prospect Michael Dal Colle of the Oshawa Generals, and Los Angeles Kings prospect Roland McKeown of the Kingston Frontenacs will all serve as alternate captains for both games, with St. Louis Blues prospect Robby Fabbri of the Guelph Storm also serving as an alternate for Game 3 of the series in Peterborough.
Bigras, a second round pick of the Avalanche in 2013, is a 19-year-old defenceman from Elmvale, ON, and represented Canada at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship after playing in both 2013 SUBWAY Super Series games. The Attack alternate captain has 17 points in 18 games playing in his fourth OHL season. Dal Colle, an 18-year-old Woodbridge, ON, native competed against Team Russia in Oshawa last season and was the fifth overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft. The Generals alternate has 23 points in 13 games this season. McKeown, an 18-year-old defenceman from Listowel, ON, was a second round pick of the Kings in June's draft and currently serves as captain for the Frontenacs making his Team OHL debut this season. Fabbri, an 18-year-old from Mississauga, ON, is also playing in his first SUBWAY Super Series after winning an OHL championship with the Storm where he was named MVP of the OHL playoffs. He was a first round pick of the Blues in 2014 and has 16 points in 11 games as an alternate captain with the Storm this season.
The OHL also announced several roster changes for both 2014 SUBWAY Super Series games. Buffalo Sabres prospect Brendan Lemieux of the Barrie Colts will now compete November 13 in Peterborough instead of November 17 in Kingston, whereas Dallas Stars prospect Jason Dickinson of the Guelph Storm will no longer compete in Peterborough on November 13 but has been added to the roster for Game 4 of the series in Kingston on November 17. Additionally, 2015 NHL Draft prospect Connor McDavid of the Erie Otters will be unable to compete for Team OHL in Peterborough on November 13 due to injury and will not be replaced.
The SUBWAYé Super Series is an integral part of the evaluation process prior to Team Canada's final selection camp in December. Team OHL enters the 12th anniversary of this event with a 19-2-1 record against Team Russia.
The 2014 SUBWAYé Super Series is supported by CHL associate sponsors, BMO Bank of Montreal, Cooper Tire and autoTRADER.ca.
