Danville Dans News Release

DANVILLE, IL - The reputation of the Danville Dans helping players prepare for major league baseball was proven again this week with six previous Dans selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. And this year's draft marks the fifth time that a Dan was selected in the first round in the team's 24-year history.

Mikie Mahtook, from LSU, was the 31st pick overall, taken in the first round by Tampa Bay Rays. Mahtook was one of five selected players who were on the 2009 Dans roster. Mahtook provided the game-winning single in the top of the 11th inning in Game 1 of the CWS Finals versus Texas in 2009, as the Tigers posted a thrilling 7-6 victory that eventually led them to the National Championship. Following the CWS, Mahtook joined the Dans and played in 18 games.

Another pick in the first 10 rounds was Mark Lamm, who also played on the 2009 Dans squad. The Vanderbilt pitcher was picked in the 6th round by Atlanta Braves.

Also selected from the 2009 Dans team were LSU's Austin Nola, going to Toronto Blue Jays in the 31st round, Justin Amlung from Louisville, selected in the 39th round by Cincinnati Reds, and Mississippi State's Jason Nappi. He hit .336, third in the league during 2009. Nappi also played on the 2007 Dans team.

The 2009 Dans place second in the west division of the inaugural season of the Prospect League with a 32-21 record.

In addition, Taylor Dennis, from Covington, IN, was selected in the 34th round by the Texas Rangers. A pitcher with Southern Indiana, Dennis was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2010 NCAA Division II Championship Series after winning two games in the Eagles' national title run. Dennis briefly played for the Dans in 2010.

"We're very excited to see these Dans get picked in the 2011 MLB draft," said Dans managing partner Jeanie Cooke. "These players join nearly 200 minor leaguers and 19 major leaguers, past and present, who are Dans alumni."

In their 24th year, the Danville Dans are affiliated with the Prospect League (formerly the Central Illinois Collegiate League - CICL). Formed in 1963, the purpose of the league is to: (a) provide family friendly, affordable baseball entertainment in the communities where our teams are located; (b) provide a summer baseball program for eligible college players to give them experience using a wood bat in a competitive atmosphere; (c) provide a venue to allow MLB scouts to watch collegiate prospects using wood bats against live pitching in competition. The League follows all general rules and regulations put forth by the NCAA to ensure the amateur status of its student athletes.
