Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CALIF - The Golden Baseball League's first two post-season awards were announced Thursday, and Chico Outlaws outfielder Daniel Nava was the recipient of the league's top honor - Nava was officially named the GBL's Most Valuable Player for the just-completed 2007 season, with Rik Currier of the Long Beach Armada selected as Pitcher of the Year.

"Honestly, I had so much fun playing baseball this year," Nava said after being informed he'd won the MVP award, sponsored by Spalding. "From making the team as a non-roster player to winning the league championship, this is just icing on the cake...I never thought I'd be in the running for anything like that."

Nava enjoyed one of the best seasons of any hitter in the three-year history of the Golden Baseball League. The 24-year-old Los Altos native won the GBL batting crown with a .371 batting average (an Outlaws single season record), ranked first in on-base percentage (.475) and was among the league leaders in home runs (12), runs batted in (59), hits (95), doubles (23), extra base hits (38), slugging percentage (.625), runs scored (70) and stolen bases (18). Defensively, he ranked second among GBL outfielders with 13 assists.

Daniel, who received two GBL Player of the Week awards and was named Player of the Month in June, finished the 2007 season with a flourish, batting a blistering .494 and driving in 28 runs during the month of August. Nava collected three of more hits in a game ten times during the season and set an Outlaws club record by hitting safely in 19 consecutive games from August 2-21. Daniel added five more hits and two RBI in the post-season to help Chico beat the Long Beach Armada and capture the team's first-ever Golden Baseball League championship.

The former Santa Clara Bronco just recently returned to California after participating in an invitation-only tryout hosted by the Toronto Blue Jays.
