SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League (CHL) today (September 3rd, 2010) announced the signing of defenseman Dane Marshall to the roster for the 2010-2011 season.
RiverKings' Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin "Killer" Kaminski says the native of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia adds a strong steadiness for his blue line corps. "Marsh will bring stability as this is his third year with us," Kaminski said. "Dane is a very good positional player with a good stick. He is also a great skater who can jump into the rush and will also bring a solid work ethic."
Last season, Marshall finished the year with six goals and 20 points, to go with 22 penalty minutes in 57 contests. He also appeared in all three Mississippi playoff games. Six of his 20 points (1 goal, 5 assists) came in a six-game stretch at the beginning of the season, between October 17th and October 30th. He has two multi-point games during the season with a goal and an assist, the first on January 23rd against Missouri, the other March 12th against Texas.
The 5-foot-10, 185 pound Marshall has scored career highs of six goals in each of his two previous seasons with the RiverKings. Last season set a career high for assists with 14, and last season had a career high of 20 points. Marshall's pro career high for penalty minutes is 36, set with the RiverKings in his rookie season of 2008-09.
It was in his rookie season that he scored his first professional hockey goal in his first pro game, against the Wichita Thunder on October 17, 2008. At the end of the season, he was named a defenseman on the CHL All-Rookie Team.
He became the first member of the RiverKings to be named to the league's All-Rookie Team since Phil Aucoin was honored at the end of the 2004-05 regular season, the first time rookie players were so recognized.
Meanwhile in the CHL playoffs, Dane has played 15 games over two seasons, netting two assists and eight penalty minutes, all coming two years ago when the RiverKings made the Northern Conference finals.
Dane looks forward to rejoining the RiverKings. "We have a pretty good group of core guys, and Killer is a good coach to play for," Marshall said. "I try to bring consistency every game and take care of my own end first, chipping in offensively where possible."
Marshall came to Mississippi after a four-year collegiate career at NCAA Division III University of Southern Maine (USM). There, he played in 106 contests, scoring seven goals and assisting on 61 others for a total of 68 points with 132 penalty minutes.
Dane is the career leader at USM for games played and is fifth on the Huskies' all-time list for assists. Marshall was also a three-time winner of the school's William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Award. At the conference level, Marshall was a member of the ECAC-East All-Rookie Team, won two all-league second-team selections and one first-team selection. Marshall was also a two-time member of the ECAC-East All-Academic Team and was named to the New England Hockey Writers Association All-New England team in 2007.
The Mississippi RiverKings will begin their 19th season of pro hockey in the Mid-South on October 15th, with the home opener against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs set for Saturday, October 16th at the DeSoto Civic Center, beginning at 7:05 PM.
