Danbury Westerners News Release
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- On July 4, Danbury Westerners alum David Villar made his major league debut with the San Francisco Giants. On his first major league pitch, he hit a double off the wall, and in his next at-bat, he hit an RBI single.
His debut makes the 2016 Westerner the 26th player in team history to play in the major leagues. He is the 192nd former NECBL player to get the call to the big leagues and appear in a game.
The call came after a spectacular 66 games in AAA this year with the Sacramento River Cats. He hit .284 with a 1.043 OPS, 21 home runs, and 62 RBI. His home run total remains the most in the Pacific Coast League so far.
While with Danbury, he also made a significant impact, hitting .276 with a .963 OPS in 103 plate appearances for the Westerners.
After a standout 2018 season at University of South Florida where he hit .374 with a 1.111 OPS in 59 games, Villar was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 11th round. He was promoted after each season in the minor leagues and put up an .868 OPS in the minors before going 2-for-4 in his MLB debut on Monday.
