Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, GA (JUNE 9, 2010) - The Columbus Lions (5-3) of the Southern Indoor Football League are proud to announce that defensive back Damian Daniels (5'10 175, West Georgia) grabbed his 50th career interception over the weekend making him one of indoor football's elite defensive players of all-time.
For the past four years Columbus fans have witnessed one of the best defensive players the indoor game has ever seen. Those who attended this past Saturday's game against the Albany Panthers saw something special as Damian intercepted three more passes moving his career total to 50 interceptions in just 45 career games.
It has come to no surprise to those within the Lions organization including that of head coach Jason Gibson. "I'm more shocked at how quickly he accumulated all those interceptions," as Gibson explains. "I, along with all of Columbus have had a real treat at watching this competitor play. Best part is that he isn't done yet."
Along with those interceptions, Daniels has landed two Defensive MVP awards. An even more impressive feat is that he has earned those awards from different leagues, first in 2007 with the World Indoor Football League (WIFL) and last season in the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA).
"Nighthawk" as Columbus fans have come to know him, shows no signs of slowing down either. Damian's nine interceptions currently has him tied for first in the SIFL and just this week he was named the Defensive Player of the Week for week 12, his second garner this season.
"When I think back to all those interceptions, it's hard for me to single out just one as they have all been either big plays that have gotten us back in the ball game or some miraculous catch he made off the turf," continues Gibson. "For instance he made one just this past weekend that bounced off a receiver's knee and somehow fell in his hands, I am constantly in awe of how he plays this game."
The Columbus Lions will look to end a two-game losing skid when they host the Greenville Force (2-6) this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. on "Business Appreciation Night." For great group ticket rates for your business, contact the Lions front office at 706-322-3336 or log on to www.columbuslions.net.
