DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars today learned that their National Hockey League (NHL) affiliate, the Dallas Stars, have signed goaltender Mike Smith to a one-year contract for the 2006-07 season. Per club policy, no financial terms were disclosed.
"Mike has developed into a solid goaltender and has improved his game each season during his four years in our minor league system," said Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong. "We look forward to having him in our training camp and compete for a position on our roster for 2006-07."
Smith, 24, played in 50 games with the Iowa Stars of the American Hockey League (AHL) last season, posting a 25-19-6 record with a 2.50 goals-against-average and a .917 save percentage. Among AHL goaltending leaders, he ranked tied for third in goals-against-average, seventh in save percentage and tied for eight in wins.
The 6-3, 211-pound goaltender was named the AHL's Goaltender of the Month for April, going 5-1-0 during the month with a 2.11 goals-against-average and a .937 save percentage. The Kingston, Ontario native also tied an AHL record when he registered three assists in a game on March 3rd, 2006 in Peoria. New Jersey's Martin Brodeur, then a member of the Utica Devils, set the record on January 23rd, 1993. In seven playoff games with Iowa, he registered a 3-4 mark with a 2.74 goals-against-average and a .907 save percentage.
A fifth round selection (161st overall) by Dallas at the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Smith notched a 19-17-3 record with a 2.42 goals-against-average, a .915 save percentage and five shutouts with the Houston Aeros (AHL) in 2004-05. In 2003-04 with Utah (AHL), he collected an 8-11-0 mark with a 2.83 goals-against-average. During his first professional season in 2002-03, Smith split his time between Utah and Lexington of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). With Lexington, he became just the sixth goalie in ECHL history to score a goal, and added a 21-save shutout that very same night on Oct. 26, 2002 vs. Dayton.
