January 3, 2005 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) News Release

Boise, ID (January 3, 2005) — The Continental Basketball Association announced today that Dakota Wizards Head Coach Casey Owens was named the League Coach of the Month for the month of December. The award marks the first monthly coaching honor for Owens, who is in his first season as a head coach in the CBA.

For the month, the New Mexico State University alum led the Wizards to a 9-2 record (7-1 at home, 2-1 on the road) and a 4.9 quarter-point average, capturing 54 of a total 77 possible quarter-points. Dakota also posted the team's longest winning streak since joining the CBA in 2001, as they won 12 straight games from November 26 through December 28. The winning streak vaulted the Wizards into first place in the Western Conference with a current 4.7 quarter-point average.

Before being named Head Coach of the Wizards, Owens spent the previous three seasons as the team's Assistant Coach and Director of Player Personnel under then head coach Dave Joerger. As the assistant, he helped lead the Wizards to two CBA Titles (2002, 2004), landed back-to-back CBA MVP's in Miles Simon (2001-02) and Andy Panko (2002-03), and boasted a league-high seven CBA-to-NBA call-ups during the 2003-04 season.

Other coaches receiving consideration for December Coach of the Month honors were the Idaho Stampede's Joe Wolf (3.4 quarter-point average, 7-7 record), the Rockford Lightning's Chris Daleo (4.2 quarter-point average, 9-5 record), and Sioux Fall's Joerger (4.1 quarter-point average, 9-5 record).
