Butler and Bangura earn player of the week honors

Boise, ID (January 3, 2005) — The Continental Basketball Association announced today that Great Lakes Storm center Jackie Butler was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week, while Sioux Falls Skyforce guard Alpha Bangura was named the Western Conference Player of the Week for the week of December 26 through January 1.

Butler averaged a double-double for the week with 14.3 points and 10.0 rebounds per game as he led the Storm to a 3-1 record. He also added 2.3 assists and 1.0 blocked shot per game, while shooting 49.0 percent (22 of 45) from the floor. In a 121-111 (5-2) victory over the Rockford Lightning on December 29, Butler posted 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. Two nights later he led the Storm with 21 points and 19 rebounds in a 105-95 (6-1) loss to Rockford.

On the season, the 6-foot-10, 250-pound center ranks 2nd in the league in rebounding with 10.3 per contest, while ranking 5th in blocked shots (1.4 per game) and 13th in scoring (16.0).

Sioux Falls guard Alpha Bangura posted 24.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game last week as he led the Skyforce to an undefeated week with two wins over the Western Conference-leading Dakota Wizards. He also added 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game, while shooting 58.1 percent (18 of 31) from the floor.

In a 104-95 (5.5-1.5) victory over Dakota on December 29, Bangura scored 15 points and added four assists and three rebounds. Two nights later he posted 34 points and five rebounds as the Skyforce defeated the Wizards 111-107 (6-1) in a New Years Eve game at the Bismarck Civic Center. The two-game sweep narrowed the margin of quarter-point average between the two teams to 4.7 quarter-points per game for Dakota to 4.6 for Sioux Falls.

Other players receiving consideration were Rockford's Brian Lubeck (19.6 ppg, 7.2 rpg), Gary's Darrin Hancock (19.3 ppg, 5.3 apg), Dakota's Billy Keys (16.0 ppg, 7.0 apg), and Idaho's Sam Clancy (18.0 ppg, 9.3 rpg).
