New York Dragons News Release

(October 4) The af2 Defensive Player of the Year in 2005 will suit up as a Dragon in 2006. The Dragons have come to terms with DS Dahnel Singfield on a one-year contract. Singfield is the first free agent acquisition for the Dragons for the upcoming 2006 season.

"The acquisition of Dahnel Singfield is significant because his style of play seems like a perfect fit for us," said Dragons head coach Weylan Harding. "He has the right attitude and he brings an impressive resume: af2 Defensive Player of the Year, 1st Team All-af2 and winner of an Arena Cup. The experience he's gained as a result of his time in af2 will make his transition that much smoother. I fully expect that he will compete for a starting position with us."

In 2005, his second in the af2, Singfield's recorded a league-high 12 interceptions. He also led the league in passes defended with 62, 20 more than any other player in the af2. He also recovered three fumbles and led the Memphis Xplorers in tackles with 73.0

The 6-0, 180 pound Singfield, from the University of Buffalo, was named to the 2005 All-af2 National Conference First Team. He earned Second Team honors in his rookie season of 2004. Singfield was also named ADT Defensive Player of the Game four times in 2005. At Buffalo, Singfield converted from wide receiver to defensive back in his senior season and had one interception.

Harding is widely regarded as one of the best in the AFL at developing young defensive backs into stars. Last season he took DS Billy Parker from an open tryout invitee to a contract with the Miami Dolphins of the NFL. As an assistant coach in Buffalo in 2001, he coached DS Dwaine Carpenter to an NFL deal with the San Francisco 49ers.
