Dahlkemper, Mewis and Williams Named to USWNT Roster
October 6, 2016 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
Western New York Flash News Release
BUFFALO, NY-- United States National Team head coach Jill Ellis named 24 players to the training camp roster ahead of two matches against Switzerland, and three Western New York Flash players were named to the roster. Flash Midfielder Sam Mewis will re-join the American side after spending time with them throughout 2016, while defender Abby Dahlkemper and forward Lynn Williams will each be making their first appearance on the roster.
Mewis spent time with the National Team over the summer as the team traveled to Brazil for the Summer Olympic Games. Since returning to the Flash, Mewis has contributed 3 goals and 1 assist, including a goal and assist in the team's 4-3 (ET) semifinal win over the Portland Thorns.
Dahlkemper has been a force on the Flash's back line in the 2016 season, playing every minute of the 2016 season to earn her first call up to the senior team. The defender has 2 goals and an assist to her name in her 1920 minutes played.
Williams lead the National Women's Soccer League this season with 11 goals and 5 assists, helping her to win the 2016 Golden Boot. The 23-year old forward scored two goals in extra time of the Flash's semifinal win in Portland to clinch a spot in the NWSL Championship.
"Right now, we are in a phase where we want to try to expand the player pool, look at a number of players and start the long process to qualifying for the next World Cup," said Ellis. "That means several of our more experienced players won't be in for this camp while we get to evaluate some different personnel. In order to see if these players can contribute, we need to get them into a National Team training environment and in games."
The U.S. Women's National Team will play two matches against Switzerland, one on Oct. 19 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah (7 p.m. MT on ESPN2) and a second on Oct. 23 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn. (12:45 p.m. MT on FS1). Ellis will name 18 players to suit up for each match.
The Flash will continue their playoff run in Houston, Texas, on Sunday, October 9. The team will face the Washington Spirit at the BBVA Compass Stadium for the 2016 NWSL Championship. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 ET and will be broadcasted on Fox Sports 1.
