Hickory Crawdads News Release
The Hickory Crawdads offense pounded out fifteen hits combined with strong starting pitching by Rodolfo Aguirre and defeated the Lexington Legends 8-2 Tuesday night at Applebee's Park in Lexington, KY. The win for Hickory was their second straight win, the first time the Crawdads won consecutive games since a three game streak July 26-28 at Charleston, SC.
Aguirre was outstanding in his second straight start as he allowed only two runs and three walks in six shutout innings while striking out seven Legend hitters. Meanwhile, the Hickory offense was led by the top of the order as Keanon Simon and Austin McClune combined to go 7-12 with five RBIs on the night.
After both teams went scoreless in the first two innings, the Crawdads collected runs in four consecutive innings to earn the win.
In the third inning, Hickory scored a run off after Legends' starter Leandro Cespedes had struck out the first two hitters in the inning. Simon lined a single to center and scored on a double by McClune for a 1-0 lead.
One inning later, Tom Hagan led off with a double and scored on a single by Ronald Pena.
In the fifth inning, the Crawdads brought out the big sticks as McClune and Eric Huber each hit a solo home run off Cespedes to open a 4-0 lead.
Hickory added an unearned run in the sixth off Lexington reliever Reid Kelly as Simon hit a two out single to score Silvio Pena, who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.
Lexington scored their only two runs in the 7th off Crawdads reliever Serguey Linares. After two men were out, Linares hit Steve Brown with a pitch. Julian Henson reached on a single before Linares loaded the bases by walking Catlin Everett. Craig Corrado then brought home the two Legend runs for the night with a single to center.
However, Hickory answered back with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to bring the score to its final 8-2 conclusion. In the 8th, Greg Picart doubled and scored on a single by Simon. The 9th inning followed nearly the same script as Ronald Pena doubled and scored later in the inning as Joey Munoz singled him in.
Aguirre recorded his second win in as many starts bringing his record to 2-3 for the season. Cespedes took the loss and dropped to 2-6 on the year.
The two teams continue their series on Wednesday in Lexington. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. The game can be heard live on 92.1 FM WMNC or on hickorycrawdads.com with Mike Janela providing the play-by-play
