Dachshunds Take the Ice

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-The Waterloo Black Hawks are looking for eastern Iowa's next star Dachshund, with plans now in place for the Second Annual Dachshund Derby at Young Arena on Saturday, November 17th, presented by Slumberland Furniture, Paw Prints Pet Salon in Hudson, and NutriSource Pet Foods.

Last April, Rudy became the first winner of the event, guided by a pit crew of Zach Smith and Lindsey King. Rudy was the top dog among 18 entrants for the race.

Appropriately for a tough, tenacious breed dashing around an arena typically patrolled by burly hockey players, the Dachshund Club of America reminds Dachshund judges in its breed standard that "inasmuch as the Dachshund is a hunting dog, scars from honorable wounds shall not be considered a fault."

This season's Dachshund race will be held during the second intermission of the Hawks' November 17th game against the Sioux City Musketeers. Once again, the $10 entry fee for each participating dog will be donated to the Cedar Bend Humane Society for the benefit of homeless pets in the area. Additionally, Slumberland Furniture has pledged to match the total contribution.

Discounted game tickets are available at registration to the two human companions assisting each entered Dachshund. All owners are also required to provide a kennel, and Black Hawks' staff will monitor a check-in/check-out area during the game.

The deadline for Dachshund Derby entries is Thursday, November 15th. More information about the event is included with the accompanying registration forms.
