Washington, D.C. (January 21, 2014) - D.C. United today announced that the club has selected Creighton University midfielder Zach Barnes in the third round (56th overall) and Campbell University defender Travis Golden in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.
A Flower Mound, Texas native, Barnes began his career at Southern Methodist University (SMU) after being named the 2010 Gatorade Texas Soccer Player of the Year and a Parade All-American during his senior year at Edward Marcus High School. In two seasons at SMU, the midfielder started in 34 games and combined for six goals and two assists, and was tied for fourth on the team in 2010 with five goals. After transferring to Creighton in 2012, he played in every match for the Jays and was listed as No. 75 in TopDrawerSoccer.com's 2012 Midseason 100 to Watch List. During the 2013 campaign, the senior started all 20 games and was named First-Team Big East All-Conference.
"Barnes is a leader and a winner who comes from a great program," said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. "He is a solid holding midfielder who makes players around him better."
Golden, an Austin, Texas native, anchored the defense for the Camels during his four years earning three Big South All-Conference team selections. In 2010, he played in 12 matches as a freshman before breaking onto the scene during his sophomore year playing in 17 games (13 starts) and scoring three goals while earning Second-Team All Big South honors. During his junior season, the centerback started all 19 games and led the team to seven shutouts and was named First-Team All Big South Conference. In 2013, he appeared in 15 games (13 starts) and scored one goal while being named Second-Team All Big South Conference.
"Golden is a versatile left footed player who can play left back or centerback," said Dave Kasper. "He is a very good passer out of the back."
