D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (November 11, 2013) - D.C. United today announced that Homegrown goalkeeper Bill Hamid has been selected to the U.S. Men's National Team's (USMNT) roster for the upcoming international friendlies on Nov. 15 against Scotland in Glasgow, Scotland, and on Nov. 19 against Austria in Vienna, Austria. The team will report on Nov. 11 in Glasgow before traveling to Vienna on Nov. 16 for the second leg of the trip.
Head Coach Jurgen Klinsmann has recalled the D.C. United goalkeeper on a few occasions in 2013. He first appeared on the 18-man roster against Canada on Jan. 29 for an international friendly and was later named to the roster for a friendly against Germany on June 2, a game that was played at Hamid's home ground of RFK Stadium, which celebrated the centennial of the U.S. Soccer Federation. Hamid was most recently a member of the 2013 U.S. Men's National Team that won gold at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Hamid earned his first cap with the senior U.S. Men's National Team a year ago when he registered a clean sheet in the side's 1-0 win over Venezuela on Jan. 21, 2012 in Glendale, Ariz. The 22-year-old netminder was called up several times in 2011, serving as Tim Howard's backup in games against Mexico (Aug. 10), Costa Rica (Sept. 2), Belgium (Sept. 6), Honduras (Oct. 8), France (Nov. 11) and Slovenia (Nov. 15). In each case, the D.C. United Academy product was on the 18-man roster, but did not see the field. Hamid also appeared in three matches in March 2012, alongside United teammate Perry Kitchen, for the U-23 U.S. Men's National Team in its quest to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.
In his fourth season with D.C. United, Hamid started 25 games and recorded four shutouts with a 1.56 GAA, including a shutout against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 1 helping lead the Black-and-Red to the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title. On Sept. 2, 2009, Hamid became the first D.C. United Academy player to sign directly with the First Team. The goalkeeper made history on May 5, 2010 when he became the youngest goalkeeper to win an MLS contest at 19 years and 161 days old, besting the previous record held by Tim Howard.
