D.C. United Forward Luciano Emilio Voted MLS Player of the Month for September
October 3, 2007 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK (Oct. 3, 2007) - D.C. United forward Luciano Emilio was named MLS Player of the Month for September after scoring six goals and helping lead United to a 4-0-2 record during the month.
Led by Emilio, United vaulted past the New England Revolution into first place in the Eastern Conference. Entering September, United were three points behind New England, but are now four points clear of the Revolution in the race for the Supporters' Shield, which United won last year as the team with the best regular season record in MLS.
Emilio recorded a two-goal game in a tie versus Chivas USA and another in a win over New England. He also scored in wins over Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC. Emilio has scored 20 goals in 26 games played this season and leads the Budweiser Golden Boot race. This marks the first time since 2002 a player has scored 20 goals in a season. The last to accomplish the feat were Carlos Ruiz (24) and Taylor Twellman (23) in 2002.
In his first year in MLS, the Brazilian striker is making a case for two of the League's most prestigious awards - the Honda Most Valuable Player and the Newcomer of the Year. This marks the first time Emilio has been named MLS Player of the Month. His teammate, goalkeeper Troy Perkins, was named Player of the Month for August. Emilio has won MLS Player of the Week honors three times this season (Weeks 11, 18 & 23).
Emilio will look to add to his impressive goal total when United travel to face the Kansas City Wizards on Friday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. ET.
The Major League Soccer Player of the Month is selected following each month of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
