D.C. United and Chicago Fire Both Victorious in Carolina Challenge Academy Cup

Charleston, SC. The Chicago Fire, D.C. United, South Carolina United (Battery) and North Meck SC USSF Academy teams played a round-robin tournament in the U16 and U18 age brackets last weekend in conjunction with the Carolina Challenge Cup. D.C. United won the U16 division and the Chicago Fire were victorious in the U18 division.

SC United Executive Director Clark Brisson said, "We hope the academy division can become an annual event in conjunction with the Carolina Challenge Cup. Thanks to all the clubs who made this a great first event and the Battery for their fantastic support."

D.C. United tied North Meck 1-1 in their opening game on Saturday at Patriots Point but advanced via a penalty shoot-out. In the final, played on Sunday at Blackbaud Stadium D.C. defeated the Chicago Fire U16's 3-1.

In the U18 final the Chicago Fire earned some revenge as they defeated D.C. United U18's by a score of two goals to one. Chicago advanced to the championship game with a penalty shoot-out victory versus the South Carolina United Battery.

In addition to the competitive game schedule in the Carolina Challenge Academy Cup the junior sides were on hand to watch the senior teams compete at Blackbaud Stadium on Saturday night.

The Chicago Fire's two Academy teams will spend part of week with the senior team training in Charleston, SC.

For the first time South Carolina United's USSF Academy teams competed in the Charleston Battery colors as the Battery strengthens its relationship with the SC United Academy sides.

The Carolina Challenge Cup continues on Wednesday as D.C. United play the Chicago Fire at 5 PM followed by the Charleston Battery vs Toronto FC at 7:15 PM.
