Cyclones Steal a Win over 'Cats

Brooklyn, NY - The Cyclones stole a franchise record eight bases and Darwin Ramos (2-3) tossed 6.0 shutout frames as Brooklyn opened up a six-game homestand with a 6-3 win over the Tri-City ValleyCats on Wednesday night.

Brooklyn wasted no time getting on the board, scoring twice in the bottom of the first thanks to a noticeably more aggressive style of play. Walter Rasquin singled to start the frame and then stole second and third base before coming home on an RBI single from Jose M. Medina. Medina, who returned the the lineup after a brief respite due to a lingering foot issue, promptly stole second and scored on a single from Quinn Brodey that made it 2-0 after one.

Brooklyn kept the pressure on in the second as Carl Stajduhar deposited his third home run of the season, well beyond the left field scoreboard, to give Brooklyn a 3-0 edge. After a pair of outs Edgardo Fermin started a little two-out trouble with a triple down the right field line. Rasquin then walked to put a pair of runners on the corners and, on a 2-1 offering, broke towards second base for his third steal of the game. When Tri-City catcher Gabriel Bracamonte threw down to second, Fermin broke for the plate and slid in safely to pull off the successful double steal and make it 4-0 in favor of the Cyclones.

But after the early outburst from the Brooklyn bats, offense was at a premium for the remainder of the game. Alex House came out of the bullpen for Tri-City and retired all 12 batters he faced, but Brooklyn starter Darwin Ramos (2-3) matched him zero for zero. The Cyclones righthander tossed 6.0 shutout frames, scattering four hits and one walk, while striking out seven.

With Ramos out of the game after the sixth, the ValleyCats mounted some offense against Brooklyn reliever Chris Viall. The tall righthander was able to escape a bases loaded jam in the seventh, but the 'Cats clawed out a run in the top of the eighth to trim the Brooklyn advantage to 4-1.

But in the bottom of the frame the Cyclones tacked on a pair of runs - courtesy of a Carl Stajduhar ground out and a Carlos Sanchez RBI single - to push the Brooklyn advantage to 6-1.

Stephen Villines was called on to pitch the ninth for the Cyclones, in his MCU Park debut, and the righthander seemed to close out the win when Bryan De La Cruz grounded into what seemed like a routine double play to end the game. But first base umpire Scott Molloy called De La Cruz safe, and while Jose Maria argued, Gabriel Bracamonte chugged home from second base to make it 6-2. J.J. Matijevic followed with an RBI double that trimmed the lead to 6-3, but Villines was able to record the final out and close out the win.

Brooklyn will look to make it two in a row over the ValleyCats on Thursday night when they send LHP Jake Simon to the mound. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a Jose Reyes Sliding Bobblehead courtesy of NYU Lutheran
