Cyclones Closing in on Playoff Spot

February 27, 2006 - Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) - Twin City Cyclones News Release

The Pee Dee Cyclones captured four out of a possible six points this past weekend, defeating Jacksonville on Saturday night after losing in overtime to both Florida and Knoxville. As a result, the Cyclones are now thirteen points ahead of Jacksonville in the race for the sixth, and final, playoff spot in the SPHL. With nine games left in the regular season, Pee Dee needs only a combination of three victories or three Jacksonville regulation losses to clinch a playoff spot in their first season in the SPHL. It would be the first time since the spring of 2003 that the Pee Dee will be able to participate in post-season hockey action.

The Cyclones face a busy week ahead with three road games, starting Tuesday night in Columbus, Georgia. The ‘Clones only home game of the week is Thursday night against Huntsville @ 7:35PM and then the team heads back on the road to Knoxville on Friday and to Fayetteville on Saturday.

Upcoming games & promotions:

Tuesday, February 28th @ Columbus Cottonmouths (7:35PM). Sixth meeting of the year against the Cottonmouths. The season series stands at 2-2-1. Columbus is in second place in the SPHL , two points ahead of Fayetteville. Follow the action at www.pointstreak.com .

Thursday, March 2nd vs. Huntsville Havoc (7:35PM @ Florence Civic Center). The eighth meeting of the year with the fifth place Havoc. Huntsville leads the season series 4 games to 3. Promotion: "Student & Military Night". Anyone showing either a valid student or military I.D. can purchase tickets for only $5.00 and the Cyclones have a $5.00 General Admission ticket for Thursday night games. Also: "Thirsty Thursday" with $2.00 draft beer and $1.00 soft drink specials.

Friday, March 3rd @ Knoxville Ice Bears (7:35PM). It's the tenth meeting of the year against the first place Ice Bears. Knoxville leads the season series 7-2 but finished up only 2-2-1 at the Florence Civic Center. At the Knoxville Civic Center, the Ice Bears have posted an impressive record of 19-1-2. Saturday, March 4th @ Fayetteville FireAntz (7:35PM). It will be the twelfth and final meeting of the regular season against Fayetteville. The FireAntz have already won the "Press Box I-95 Challenge Cup" with nine victories. Fayetteville has slipped to third in the SPHL standings but are only two points behind second place Columbus. The FireAntz can help Pee Dee with their playoff hopes on Tuesday night when they play in Jacksonville. Follow the action at www.pointstreak.com .

Cyclones and the SPHL Playoffs

If the SPHL regular season ended today, the Cyclones would be in sixth place and qualify for the sixth and final playoff spot. As of right now, they would play the first place Knoxville Ice Bears in a best of five series that would start during the week of March 20th. According to reports in the February 9th edition of the Knoxville News-Sentinel, due to an arena conflict with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, Knoxville will not have home ice availability for the first week of the SPHL playoffs and games #1 & #2 of the series could be played at the Florence Civic Center and those dates would be Friday & Saturday, March 24th & 25th.

Cyclones Player Notes:

Forward Edan Welch continues to lead the team in scoring with 31 goals & 29 assists for 60 points in 47 games. Welch's 31 goals also lead the team in that category. Forward Trevor Karasiewicz leads the Cyclones in assists with 33 in 39 games. Forward Chris Murphy leads Pee Dee in penalty minutes with 204 minutes in 45 games. Defenseman Dan Pszenyczny leads in plus / minus with a +6 rating.
