MOLINE, Ill. (March 12, 2014) - Vincent Arseneau scored what proved to be the winning goal early in the third period, Troy Schwab provided an insurance goal by converting a penalty shot midway through the third and John Griggs made 23 saves as the Denver Cutthroats defeated the host Quad City Mallards 4-2 Wednesday night. By extended their winning streak to six games the Cutthroats (32-15-10, 74 points) moved into a second place tie while the loss left the Mallards (28-19-8, 64 points) still tied for fifth place.
The Mallards battled from behind to tie the game at two at 3:05 of the third with Benjamin-Dieude Fauvel's blast from the high slot. However, just under a minute and a half later, Arseneau's wrist shot from the left wing circle put the Cutthroats back on top for good. Schwab gave Denver its first two-goal lead when his penalty shot hit the goal post, caromed off Mallard goaltender Thomas Heemskerk and trickled over the goal line at 10:09 of the final frame.
The Cutthroats had twice forged in front earlier in the evening. A.J. Gale gave Denver a 1-0 lead with a drive from the left wing circle at 11:17 of the first period. After Gergo Nagy's shot from the top of the left wing circle broke in off Griggs to tie the score at one at 1:29 of the second period the Cutthroats rebounded to regain the lead with Kyle Fletcher's tip-in at 15:27 of the second.
The Mallards and Cutthroats meet again Friday night in Denver. The Mallards next play at home next Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. against the St. Charles Chill.
