Erie BayHawks News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania, Wednesday, January 21, 2015 - The Erie BayHawks (9-16) defeated the league-leading Maine Red Claws (17-6) 95-93 after Seth Curry buried a two-point jumper as time expired. Erie had trailed by as many as 13 early in the game and have won two straight games after dropping eight in a row.
The Red Claws started strong early, going on a 9-1 run to begin the quarter. Jarvis Williams, making his third consecutive start, got the BayHawks going, scoring seven points on 3 of 4 shooting. The Red Claws held their largest lead of the game midway through the quarter, 22-9. Maine was led by Tim Frazier and Christian Watford, each scoring seven points. Erie's late run cut Maine's lead to just five heading into the second frame.
The BayHawks started the second quarter strong, using an 11-2 run over the first six minutes to take the lead. Curry hit his first three of the game with 6:30 to play in the half, capping off a 23-8 run for the BayHawks to take their first lead of the game. The Red Claws looked to go on a 7-0 run of their own with just under two minutes to go, however, a three-point shot was overturned, allowing the BayHawks to hold onto the lead 46-44 going into halftime.
The third quarter started with another Curry 3-pointer, extending the lead to 49-44. The Red Claws would go on to make three 3-pointers in a row in just over a minute, regaining the lead 58-55. John Bohannon scored a layup with 2.3 seconds left to give the BayHawks a six-point lead going into the final frame.
Leslie McDonald opened up the final quarter scoring Erie's first five of eight points. With 6:37 remaining, Omari Johnson scored to give the Red Claws the lead again, 83-82. Back-to-back three-pointers from Lenzelle Smith, Jr. and Peyton Siva gave the BayHawks a three-point lead with under three minutes to play in the game. After Frazier hit a two-point jumper to give Maine a 92-91 lead with 17 seconds remaining, the Red Claws had a foul to give, but it was the second foul in under two minutes. Drew Crawford sunk both free throws to retake the lead. Maine's Jason Calliste would tie the game with a free throw on the other end and it was Erie's ball with 2.7 seconds left. The BayHawks threw it to Curry in the corner who pumped to escape two defenders, dribbled once and fired a two that dropped through the net.
Curry added that buzzer beater to lead Erie with 19 points. Smith, Jr. tallied 13 off the bench and Daniel Coursey, who didn't make the starting lineup for the third straight game, finished with 12.
The Red Claws had seven players in double figures, including Tim Frazier and Christian Watford who had 17 apiece. Watford also pulled down a game high 15 rebounds to record the only double-double of the game.
With the win against the top team in the league, the BayHawks earned their first divisional win of the season. Erie will return home Friday night against the Westchester Knicks. From there, they will go on a three game road trip, facing the Canton Charge twice and the Oklahoma City Blue.
