Iowa Cubs News Release
Papillion, NE - Josh Vitters blasted a game-tying, two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning, but the Omaha Storm Chasers (33-23) answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth for a 5-4 win over the Iowa Cubs (25-29) on Friday night at Werner Park. The Cubs and Storm Chasers split this four-game series. The Cubs are 6-2 on this road trip.
Brett Jackson jump-started the Cubs' offense with a home run leading off the top of the first inning. It was his seventh home run of the season and his second leadoff homer. He set an Iowa franchise record with six leadoff homers last year. Luis Valbuena added a double in the first, but that was the last hit that Storm Chasers' starter Ryan Verdugo would allow until the top of the sixth inning.
The Storm Chasers also started quickly in the bottom of the first inning. Derrick Robinson led off with a single and Anthony Seratelli followed with a two-run homer to right field off Cubs' starter Chris Volstad. The Storm Chasers extended the lead in the third inning. Seratelli singled and Volstad was called for a balk to move him to second. Cubs' pitching coach Mike Mason argued the call and was ejected from the game. On the next pitch, Seratelli stole third before Wil Myers lined a home run over the wall in center field for his second homer of the series and his fifth of the season. Volstad would work through 6.2 innings without allowing another run.
The Cubs got one run back in the top of the sixth inning. Dave Sappelt led off with a single, went to third on a double by Valbuena, and scored on an infield single by Ty Wright. That knocked Verdugo from the game. Francisley Bueno came in and stranded both inherited runners to finish the sixth and tossed a scoreless seventh.
The Storm Chasers brought in Jeremy Jeffress to pitch in the top of the eighth. Wright led off with a single and Vitters smashed a 3-1 pitch for his eighth home run of the season to tie the game.
Jeff Beliveau finished the bottom of the seventh for Volstad and came back out for the eighth. Tony Abreu led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by David Lough. After a walk to Max Ramirez, Kevin Kouzmanoff lined a single to right field that drove in Abreu with the deciding run.
Jeffress (4-2) was charged with a blown save, but picked up the win. Beliveau (1-2) suffered the loss. Roman Colon finished the top of the ninth inning for Omaha and earned his third save.
The Cubs travel to Oklahoma City tomorrow to start a four-game series against the RedHawks at Newcastle Field at Bricktown. Tomorrow night's opener will start at 7:05. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
