CT Tigers Win Rain-Shortened Game, 2-1
August 11, 2018 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, Ct. - Alexis Garcia and Cam Warner recorded back-to-back RBI base hits in the third inning and starting pitcher Jose Vasquez carried a one-run lead into the middle of the fifth when rain washed away the remaining innings and the Connecticut Tigers (24-27) earned a 2-1 win over the Staten Island Yankees (26-26) on Saturday at Dodd Stadium.
Staten Island took a 1-0 lead against Vasquez in the top of the first on an RBI single by Kyle Gray. Vasquez (Win, 5-1) bounced back to strand runners in each of the first three innings and kept Connecticut within reach. The 22-year-old New York-Penn League All-Star pitched five innings with four hits, two walks, and four strikeouts to pick up his team-best fifth win of the year and lower his earned run average to 1.93 in 46 2/3 innings this season.
Darwin Alvarado opened the Connecticut rally in the third with a leadoff walk against Staten Island starter Frank German (Loss, 0-2). Reece Hampton followed with a single and two batters later, Garcia picked up his seventh RBI in 23 NYPL games this year. Warner immediately followed with a seeing-eye double down the left-field line that scored Hampton from third and gave the Tigers their first lead since the seventh inning on August 6 in a 7-4 home loss to the Tri-City ValleyCats.
The Yankees threatened in the top of the fifth with a leadoff walk but the Tigers turned a double play between Garcia at second base and Nick Ames at first. Vasquez induced a flyout to end the frame and rain started falling moments later before the Tigers could bat in the bottom of the fifth. Staten Island and Connecticut were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday, but following a forty-minute rain delay, NYPL umpires Thomas Fornarola and Dylan Bradley officially called off all remaining innings to snap Connecticut's five-game losing streak. Game 2 will not be made up.
On Sunday, the Tigers return to Dodd Stadium for the final two games against the Staten Island Yankees this season during a previously-scheduled doubleheader with first pitch at 3:05 p.m. Coverage on the Norwich Courtyard by Marriott Connecticut Tigers Radio Network begins with Kevin Gehl and Elijah Gonzalez at 2:50 p.m. on WICH 1310 AM and online at CTTigers.com.
