Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
LOWELL, Ma. - After giving up two runs in the first inning, Jose Vasquez battled back with five scoreless frames and Darwin Alvarado drove in the go-ahead run on a two-out RBI single in the sixth to give the Connecticut Tigers (7-11) a 4-3 win and their first road series victory of the season against the Lowell Spinners (8-10) on Tuesday night at LeLacheur Park.
Trailing 2-0 in the third inning, Tigers second baseman Alexis Garcia led off with a triple to center and scored two batters later when Jose Quero drove him home on an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Connecticut took its first lead in the fourth after defensive miscues by the Spinners. After back-to-back singles by Cam Warner and Gresuan Silverio, Lowell second baseman Jarren Duran committed a throwing error on a potential double-play grounder by Alvarado that scored Warner from second to tie the game. Alvarado quickly moved to third on a wild pitch and another throwing error. With two outs, Teddy Hoffman rolled a grounder to first and beat the tag attempt by Xavier LeGrant on a headfirst slide that allowed Alvarado to score the go-ahead run from third, 3-2.
Alvarado drove in the eventual game-winning run in the sixth inning with two outs to score Sam McMillan from third. Alvarado finished a team-best 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a triple.
Vasquez (Win, 2-1) matched his career-high with six innings and worked around eight hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Ethan DeCaster (Hold, 2) followed Vasquez with 1 2/3 innings of relief and was charged with his first earned run as a Tiger on a two-out flyball to left that got lost in the lights and dropped behind the outfielders to score Michael Chavis from first and cut Connecticut's lead to 4-3.
Yaya Chentouf (Save, 2) relieved DeCaster in the eighth and recorded the final four outs to improve to 2-for-2 in save opportunities as a pro. The Tigers picked up their first comeback win on the road this season and took two of three games in Lowell to improve to 2-7 away from home this year.
On Wednesday, Connecticut returns home to Dodd Stadium in Norwich to again face the Stedler Division-rival Lowell Spinners in a three-game series that begins on July 4 at 7:05 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Gio Arriera (1-1, 4.11) gets the start against Lowell righty Thad Ward in his New York-Penn League debut. An Independence Day fireworks spectacular will immediately follow the game on Wednesday night.
