Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
TROY, N.Y. - Nick Ames hit a towering, solo homer as the Connecticut Tigers (24-29) jumped out to a 2-0 lead but the first-place Tri-City ValleyCats (33-23) scored three unanswered runs to beat the Tigers, 3-2, on Wednesday night at Bruno Stadium.
Ames hit his third home run of the year to break a scoreless tie in the top of the second inning on a 437-footer to straightaway center field. The 21-year-old first baseman from UNLV matched Dayton Dugas for the team lead in home runs this season. Connecticut doubled its lead to 2-0 in the third on an RBI groundout by Jordan Verdon that scored Isrrael De La Cruz from third base.
Tigers starting pitcher Gio Arriera carried a shutout into the fifth inning when the ValleyCats broke through with a two-out, RBI single by Tri-City designated hitter Austin Dennis. Arriera exited in line for the win after five complete innings, four hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.
Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, Tri-City rallied for its first lead of the night. Following a one-out walk issued by Tigers reliever Juan Aguilera (Loss, 0-1), Andy Pineda drove a game-tying triple to the wall in center field. One batter later, Ramiro Rodriguez lined out to first base and Ames tried to double-off the runner at third base but he committed a throwing error that allowed Pineda to score the go-ahead run, 3-2.
Tri-City relievers Brett Conine and Carlos Hiraldo (Win, 4-0) combined to throw four scoreless innings and the Tigers tallied three hits through the final six innings. Felix Viloria pitched a perfect eighth inning for the Tigers with two strikeouts. Following the loss, Connecticut fell 7 1/2 games behind the Stedler Division-leading ValleyCats with 21 games left.
The Tigers complete their two-game road trip to Tri-City on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Connecticut right-handed pitcher Carlos Guzman (2-3, 3.62) draws the start against Tri-City righty Mark Moclair (2-3, 6.11). Coverage on the Norwich Courtyard by Marriott Connecticut Tigers Radio Network begins at 6:50 p.m. with Kevin Gehl on WICH 1310 AM and online at CTTigers.com.
