CT Tigers Beat First-Place ValleyCats in First Meeting, 6-2
August 5, 2018 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, Ct. - Jordan Verdon reached base four times and Dayton Dugas slugged his second home run of the season as the Connecticut Tigers (23-22) topped the first-place Tri-City ValleyCats (26-22) in their first meeting, 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium.
Tigers second baseman Isrrael De La Cruz broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a two-out triple to center field that scored Sam McMillan and Verdon for a 2-0 lead. De La Cruz, a 21-year-old utility player from the Dominican Republic, finished 1-for-3 with a walk, a run, and two runs batted in.
Tigers left-handed starter and 2018 Detroit Tigers fifth-round draft pick Adam Wolf threw 41 pitches to record three scoreless innings with one hit, one walk, and one strikeout. Reliever Kacey Murphy entered in the fourth inning during his New York-Penn League debut and gave up back-to-back RBI singles in the fifth that tied the game at 2-2. Murphy left in the sixth and Felix Viloria (Win, 2-0) stranded a pair of ValleyCats in scoring position to keep the contest tied. Viloria pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings to earn his second win in three appearances with Connecticut since rejoining from West Michigan on July 26.
Both teams struggled to hit with runners in scoring position. The Tigers left the bases loaded in the second and fourth innings while the ValleyCats stranded three more runners in the top of the sixth. With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers scored three runs without a base hits as Dugas drew an RBI walk, Wenceel Perez scored on a wild pitch, and Cam Warner added another run on a fielding error at first base to take a 5-2 advantage.
Dugas added to the lead with his solo home run to left field in the eighth inning and is now the only Connecticut hitter with multiple home runs this season. Dugas finished 1-for-1 at the plate with a homer and a walk after he replaced Eric De La Rosa in the fifth. Verdon finished with three singles, a walk, and a run. Perez went 0-for-3 at the plate with a run to snap his six-game hit streak.
Drew Crosby (Hold, 6) increased his league lead in holds with one perfect inning and Yaya Chentouf faced the minimum in the ninth to secure a head-to-head victory against the ValleyCats that moved Connecticut to 1 1/2 games behind the ValleyCats for first place in the Stedler Division.
On Monday, the Tigers send right-handed starter Jose Vasquez (4-1, 2.27) against the Tri-City ValleyCats in the second game of the series beginning at 7:05 p.m. on Kids Eat Free Monday presented by U.S. Foods. Each child's ticket (12 years old and under) will receive a voucher redeemable for a hot dog, bag of chips, and a bottle of water. Coverage on the Norwich Courtyard by Marriott Connecticut Tigers Radio Network begins with Kevin Gehl and Elijah Gonzalez at 6:50 p.m. on WICH 1310 AM and online at CTTigers.com via TuneIn Radio.
