Crystal Palace Football Club, established in 1905, was a founding member of the English Premier League, today widely considered the best football league in the world. The club is currently a member of The Football League Championship (the second tier of English soccer), and plays its home matches at historic Selhurst Park in South London.

The July 16 match will be part of a week-long preseason "USA Tour" for Crystal Palace. The tour will also include a friendly on July 13 against Crystal Palace Baltimore, the organization's U.S. affiliate and one of Harrisburg's opponents in the United Soccer Leagues Second Division (USL-2). Crystal Palace Manager Neil Warnock believes that Palace UK "will be warmly met and the facilities will be good; I am totally confident about that." "We're excited to play against a well established English team," said Islanders Head Coach Bill Becher. "We look forward to the challenge and hope to continue to bring international competition to the midstate."

Crystal Palace will be Harrisburg's first ever European opponent, though the Islanders have in the past played such high-level clubs as D.C. United and the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer, the Rochester Rhinos and Vancouver Whitecaps of the USL First Division, and Village United of Jamaica.

The City Islanders are currently in their sixth season in the USL Second Division, attempting to win their second championship in three years. The club plays its home games at Skyline Sports Complex on Harrisburg's City Island. The organization's youth component, the City Islanders Academy, fields 15 teams (ages 10 through 20) in the Super-Y League and offers a wide range of instructional programs throughout the area.
