Cruz Triples in Cardinals' Win over Daytona
July 1, 2022 - Florida State League (FSL)
Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
The Palm Beach Cardinals won their 15th game in their last 19 contests Friday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium over the Daytona Tortugas, 4-2. It's the Cardinals' second in a row as they take a 3-1 lead in the six-game series. Palm Beach has also taken nine of their past 10 contests, and improves to 36-35 overall after commencing the season 14-27. In the 2nd half of the Florida State League season, the Beach Birds are now 6-1.
Adanson Cruz capped off a three-run second inning for the home team, tripling on a sharp line drive to right with two outs and scoring Jeremy Rivas and Patrick Romeri. The center fielder's RBIs came after Leonardo Bernal opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
Daytona clawed back with solo home runs in the sixth and seventh innings. But the Beach Birds answered with a homer of their own off the bat of catcher Aaron McKeithan in the eighth. The UNC-Charlotte product also paced the Birds offensively on Friday, going 2-4 with a triple in the second inning.
The Cardinal pitching held Daytona scoreless with exception of the two home runs. Bryan Pope took the win, his first of 2022, with three strikeouts and six innings pitched. The California native allowed seven baserunners on the night and absorbed an earned run. Roy Garcia provided a nine-out save while striking out seven, also allowing just one earned run. Together, the duo of righties allowed just two free passes.
Palm Beach will look to clinch the series over Daytona on Saturday night, with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch slated. It will be Kids Club Saturday at the ballpark!
