Crush Sprints Past Avengers

February 27, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Colorado Crush News Release

Colorado led from start to finish and sailed to a 58-40 win over the Los Angeles Avengers at Pepsi Center on Sunday afternoon.

The win improved the Crush to 3-2, and sends the team into its bye week on a two-game winning streak following a 1-2 start in which both losses were by three points apiece.

Colorado sprinted to a 14-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest on the strength of a 1-yard John Peaua touchdown run and a 6-yard interception return for a score by wide receiver/linebacker Kevin McKenzie. From there, the Crush and Avengers exchanged scores for the rest of the first half, allowing the Crush to pull in front 34-17 at intermission.

Back-to-back John Kaleo touchdown passes to Greg Hopkins and Kevin Ingram allowed the Avengers to narrow the Crush's lead to three points at 37-34 8:12 into the second half. But the Crush quickly responded with a 9-yard touchdown pass from John Dutton to Damian Harrell just 68 seconds later, and extended the advantage back to 17 points with another Dutton-to-Harrell connection early in the fourth period.

Harrell scored five times for the Crush on passes from Dutton, who had six touchdown strikes overall. Wide receiver/defensive back Ahmad Hawkins had his best receiving day in the AFL, snaring five passes for 81 yards and a score.

Colorado's defense came up with two fourth-down stops of the Los Angeles offense in the second half. The Crush turned both stops into scores, including the final Dutton-to-Harrell touchdown that pushed the Crush lead to 24 points with just 2:03 left in the contest.
