UTICA, N.Y. - Matt Peca scored the game-winner with 1:30 remaining in the final period to give the Syracuse Crunch a 2-1 victory over the Utica Comets in the preseason finale tonight at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. The Crunch swept the two-game preseason series against the Comets, 2-0.

Kristers Gudlevskis backstopped the Crunch, making 18 saves on 19 shots. Thatcher Demko stopped 9-of-10 shots on goal for the Comets before being relieved by Michael Garteig in the third period. Garteig went on to stop 13-of-14.

After a scoreless first period, the Crunch broke the stalemate early in the second period with a 5-on-3 advantage. Dylan Blujus fired from point, but was turned aside. Michael Bournval was at the left post to jam the rebound past Demko. Michael Halmo earned the secondary assist.

Halfway through the frame, the Comets evened the score with a power-play tally of their own. Derek Hulak tipped a shot from Jordan Subban down low to put the team on the board.

With 1:30 remaining in the game, Peca received a pass from Bournival in the corner and flipped the puck past Garteig to take the win.

The Syracuse Crunch will return to the War Memorial Arena to hold their 23rd home opener against the Rochester Americans on Oct. 15.
