Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Three early runs were not enough for the Augusta GreenJackets as the Hickory Crawdads put together six unanswered tallies to claim a 6-4 win over the GreenJackets on Sunday evening at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Matt West's two-run home run in the third inning off Chris Heston was the difference-maker, putting the Crawdads in the lead for good at 4-3. Prior to that, Heston allowed the Crawdads to load the bases in the first before getting out of the jam. In the second Heston wasn't so lucky, as Jonathan Roof's two-out single made it a one-run game before Hickory took the lead in the third. They added two more in the fourth on Roof's second RBI hit and a sacrifice fly.
Augusta jumped out to a three-run first inning lead on the strength of four hits. Ryan Cavan and Chris Dominguez hit back-to-back doubles in the frame to put the Jackets up a run. Tommy Joseph's sacrifice fly made it a two-run lead while Hector Sanchez drilled the third double of the inning to score a run and make it a 3-0 GreenJackets advantage. The Jackets didn't score again until Evan Crawford's two-out solo home run in the eighth.
The chances were there for Augusta, with hits in every inning from the third through the eighth. But in five of the six innings in that stretch, the hits came with two outs in the inning.
Heston (3-11) picked up his league-leading 11th loss in a start where he lasted just 3.2 innings and allowed six runs - five earned - on nine hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts. The Augusta bullpen limited the Crawdads to just two hits in 5.1 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts to keep the Jackets' hopes alive.
Matt Thompson (8-7) got the win for Hickory with a five-inning relief stint that saw the righty allow a run on six hits and a walk while striking out five.
Game three of the series on Monday features a matchup of Craig Clark (2-1, 3.09) taking the mound for Augusta against Neil Ramirez (7-7, 5.02). First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
