Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The South Atlantic League announced today that Hickory Crawdads 3B Joey Gallo has been named the SAL player of the week for games ending on Sunday, June 16.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Joey Gallo
.452/.500/1.226, 8 G, 14-for-31, 3 2B, 0 3B, 7 HR, 13 RBI, 11 R, 2 BB, 10 K
Gallo, selected by the Texas Rangers in the first round (39th overall) of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nev., went 14-31 for a .452 batting average during the week of June 10-16th. He hit 7 home runs, had 11 runs scored and 13 runs batted in. Additionally Gallo hit safely in six of the eight games, and had four multi-hit games.
His week was highlighted by a four-hit night against the Hagerstown Suns in Game 1 of the 7 inning doubleheader on Tuesday, June 11th. Three of those hits were home runs! The second homer was a solo shot that gave the Crawdads a comfortable 5-2 lead in in the top of the 5th inning. The 'Dads went on to win the contest 6-2. Gallo accounted for 4 runs and 14 total bases, setting a Crawdads single game record.
In 68 games played during the 2013 season, the Crawdads are putting on a collective display of power this year that may be unprecedented in the South Atlantic League. At the heart of it are sluggers Gallo and Ryan Rua, who are tied for the Minor League lead with 22 home runs apiece. No one else in the Minors has more than 18, and nine teams in the Sally League cannot match their combined 44 blasts.
