Central Valley Coyotes News Release

FRESNO – The Central Valley Coyotes of the arenafootball2 league announced today they have been acquired defensive specialist Marvin Owens and the tenth overall waiver claim pick from the San Diego Riptide in exchange for their waiver claim pick, which is the second overall.

"Marvin is an exceptional player that has a chance to take over the starting role," Coyote head coach Biletnikoff Jr. said. "With one season of af2 experience under his belt, he has a chance to make a big impact this year."

Owens (5-11, 180 pounds), who was assigned to the Riptide last month, played his first season in the af2 for the Manchester Wolves last year while leading the team in nearly every defensive category.

In his 15 games with the Wolves, Owens recorded 76 tackles, 16 batted balls, and five interceptions. All three stats were team highs. In addition to his defensive capabilities, he also caught 10 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown and returned four kickoffs for 17 yards.

Prior to his af2 debut, Owens played two years in the National Indoor Football League with the Oklahoma Crude. In his two seasons, he intercepted nine passes.

Born on December 5, 1975, he attended Butte (Oroville, Calif.) College.

The Coyotes will kick off their 2005 af2 season with an exhibition game at Selland Arena on March 27. The regular season starts on the road in Bakersfield on April 2. Fifty dollar deposits for 2005 Coyote season tickets, which include all nine games played at Selland Arena, are now being accepted at 559-263-9780.

NOTES: The Coyotes have also been assigned, WR/LB Wes Borba, FB/LB Terrell Colbert, DS Daniel Jones, FB/LB Kevin Nelson and OL/DL Joel Tautuaa. OS Kenyatte Morgan has been placed on other league exempt.
