Central Valley Coyotes News Release
Fresno, CA - After a month long search, reviewing 19 job applications, and over 50 reference calls, the Central Valley Coyotes have found their man. AFL veteran coach and player, Derrick "BIG DOG" Chachere, has been selected as the Coyotes Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the 2007 season.
Chachere, who played college football at University of Nevada, has been a part of Arena Football for 11 years, 7 as a player and 4 as a coach. His first 5 years playing were spent with the San Jose Sabercats His offensive stats from 1995 to 2000 rank at the top of the Sabercats list for Career Rushing Yards (442 yds.) and Career Rushing Attempts (154). He also ranks third on the Sabercats list in Career Rushing Touchdowns (34). He spent his final two years playing with the Buffalo Destroyers. Over his playing career his defensive statistics include 103 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 6 fumble recoveries and 1 interception on defense. On offense, his career totals include 26 receptions for 271 yards and 2 touchdown receptions and 172 rushes for 487 yards and 35 touchdown carries. In 2001, with the Buffalo Destroyers, he completed the only pass of his career for a 5 yard touchdown. His career quarterback rating was 127.08.
"When we started this process I had no idea that the final product would be a candidate of Derrick's caliber," stated Coyote Head Coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. "Most of the candidates were ex-players with minimal or no real arena coaching experience. We needed to hire more than someone who just played the game and wanted to 'kick it' with the players. We needed to hire someone that has coached the game and could 'teach' our players the arena game."
In Chachere, the Coyotes got an ex-player but, they also got someone who has coached the arena game at a high level. He started his 4 year coaching career with the New York Dragons where from 2003-2004 he was Todd Shell's special teams and defensive coordinator. In 2005, he held the same positions under Shell with the Arizona Rattlers and in 2006, Charchere returned to the team where he made his mark as an AFL player. In 2006 "Big Dog" worked for Darren Arbet as he coached the Fullbacks/Linebackers for the San Jose Sabercats.
"I've had a chance to work with some of the leagues best coaches. Defensively speaking I have had a chance to work with Arena Football's best, most recently Kevin Guy with San Jose Sabercats, AF2's all time winningest coach. I worked with Todd Shell and Larry Kuharich (New York Dragons, Arizona Rattlers) where I served as defensive coordinator with the defensive being in the top 5," stated Chachere.
On the upcoming year with the Coyotes, the Fresno resident added, "I am impressed with Coach B's adjustments and quick transition to Arena Football. In the last couple years he has had one of the top offenses and has set league records. I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with him and the Coyotes organization. I hope my experience in Arena Football will help the Coyote's continue to be a fun, exciting and a successful franchise for the Central Valley."
