Central Valley Coyotes News Release
FRESNO â The Central Valley Coyotes of the arenafootball2 league have been assigned two veteran players, wide receiver/defensive back Ty Johnson and defensive specialist Joshua Robinson, head coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. announced today.
"These are two big acquisitions for us," said Biletnikoff Jr., who was the Coyote offensive coordinator before taking over as head coach last mid-season. "Both of these guys made immediate impacts in the league last year and I see them continuing to do so."
Johnson (6-0, 210 pounds) was a two-way star last season with the Laredo Law. While playing wide receiver/defensive back with the Law, Johnson started seven games catching 12 passes for 182 yards and four touchdowns. On defense, he recorded 18 tackles, three pass deflections, one interception and a forced fumble
Before his af2 career, Johnson played at Langston (Okla.) University from 2000-01. He went on to play two seasons of semi-pro football with the Concord (Calif.) Colts from 2002-03.
While at Vallejo (Calif.) High, Johnson accumulated over 3,800 career yards at tailback and 10 career interceptions at defensive back. He received all-West honors in football and basketball while leading the basketball team to a 32-2 record. He lettered four times in football and basketball and twice in track and field.
"It's good to be close to home and play for coach like coach Biletnikoff," said the second year veteran. "I like the efforts the team has put fourth in hopes to build a winning franchise."
Born on July 17, 1980, Johnson grew up in Vallejo, Calif. with fellow teammate wide receiver/defensive back B'Jay Jones. Johnson and Jones will be reunited once again as both players played together at Vallejo High, Langston University, and most recently with the Laredo Law.
Robinson (6-0, 195 pounds), who is the second all-time leader in interceptions (16) at Idaho State, becomes the second Coyote player to be assigned from the Hawaiian Islanders. Last season, he started all 16 games while leading the team defensively in tackles with 105 tackles and interceptions with seven.
The defensive specialist played particularly well against Central Valley last season, earning defensive player of the game honors in both games against the Coyotes. In the second meeting on May 22, 2004 he recorded a career-high 11 solo tackles.
"My decision to come here was easy because the Coyotes and Coach Biletnikoff really embraced me," said the defensive back. "I am looking forward towards helping the team improve."
Born on January 31, 1981, Robinson attended Cajon High (San Bernadino, Calif.) where he earned all-league honors in his junior and senior seasons at wide receiver and defensive back.
The Coyote's will kick off their 2005 af2 season on the road in Bakersfield on April 2. Their first home game will be on April 23 at 7:30 p.m. against the Arkansas Twisters. Fifty dollar deposits for 2005 Coyote season tickets, which include eight games played at Selland Arena, are now being accepted at 559-263-9780.
