August 1, 2007 - United League Baseball (ULB) News Release


Edinburg, TX; August 1, 2007- United League Baseball (ULB) and the Alexandria announced today that the contract of Alexandria left-hander Adam Cox has been purchased by the Boston Red Sox. Cox will be reporting to the Red Sox Single-A affiliate in Lancaster, California.

Cox, a native of Valdosta, Georgia, joined the Aces in 2006 after spending his first two seasons of independent baseball with the Jackson Senators of the now defunct Central League. The 27-year old south-paw began his professional career in the Indians organization. Cox was selected in the fourth round of the 2000 draft but was plagued with injuries throughout his first four seasons of pro baseball. In 2006 Cox was a member of the 2006 United League Champion Aces.

In 2007 Cox was tapped as the lead "Ace" for Alexandria by Field Manager Ricky VanAsselberg. In 17 starts Cox compiled a 12-2 record which is a ULB record for wins in a season. His 2.38 ERA and 117 strikeouts also currently lead all pitchers in United League Baseball. In 105.2 innings Cox has allowed just 28 earned runs, with an opponent's batting average against of .221. After starting the season (1-2) in his first six starts, Cox has won his last 11 consecutive starts. Cox's last loss came on June 6th.

"We are ecstatic about Cox's contract purchase," ULB President Craig Brasfield said. "Cox is a tremendous talent and has been on of the best pitchers in our league the last two seasons. What a treat this is for our league now selling our sixth player of the year, give credit to our field managers for finding such strong players to fill the rosters in our league. We wish Adam the very best."

Cox becomes the sixth player from United League Baseball to be sold to a Major League organization in 2007 and the 11th player in the history of the league to move on to affiliated baseball.

United League Baseball is an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas and Louisiana. The United League is in its second season with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Laredo, Harlingen, and San Angelo, Texas; and Alexandria, Louisiana. The ULB will play a 100-game schedule between May and August 2007. The ULB's seventh franchise will be located in Brownsville, TX
