Covered in White Chocolate, Maryland's New ABA Basketball Team Is Super Sweet

November 27, 2004 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Maryland NightHawks News Release

Upper Marlboro, MD – In its inaugural season, the Maryland Nighthawks of the legendary American Basketball Association (ABA) has made one of its most dramatic signings to date. Randy Gill, better known to the streetball community as "White Chocolate," has agreed to lend his uncanny abilities to a team destined to make its mark in ABA history. Last year, Gill dazzled audiences nationwide with his wicked ball-handling skills and deadly jump shot as champion and $100,000 winner of MTV's "Who's Got Game" streetball challenge. A graduate of Bowie State and a superstar on the street basketball circuit, Gill will provide an immediate lift to an already talented team.

"I could have played basketball anywhere in the world," said Gill, a native of Laurel, Maryland. "However, I chose to play right here at home. I want to put the Maryland Nighthawks on the map by winning an ABA Championship."

Joining "White Chocolate" is another well-known basketball celebrity with a few tricks of his own. Coach James "Twiggy" Sanders, formerly of the world-renowned Harlem Globetrotters, is quick to state that Maryland Nighthawks basketball is professional, not playground. "Every player on this squad is fundamentally sound," proclaims Sanders. "They've all played organized ball at top schools across the country and overseas. They are tomorrow's superstars!" According to both Gill and Sanders, the number one goal is to win. Not surprisingly, entertaining the fans is a very close second.

Fun, affordable family entertainment is perhaps the greatest draw to home games played at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro. With tickets as low as $7, there is no denying the appeal to true basketball fans, young and old, living in Prince George's County.

"What can I say? It's great!" says John Doe who resides in College Park with his wife and four kids. "The games are ultra-competitive. The players are really fan-friendly. And best of all, it's cheaper than going to the movies!"

The Maryland Nighthawks' remaining home games in December are as follows: 12/1 vs. Nashville, 12/8 vs. Philadelphia, 12/10 vs. Georgia, 12/13 vs. Philadelphia, 12/19 vs. Harlem, 12/22 vs. New Jersey. Tickets can be purchased by calling TicketMaster, 202-397-SEAT, or at the Nighthawks box office, 410-487-0850.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
