June 30, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
Carolina Courage News Release

Carolina continued its race up the league table, earning two victories this week. On Wednesday, the Courage won 3-2 at New York, extending its road unbeaten streak to seven games. Saturday, Carolina dumped San Diego, 3-0, at home. Kristin Luckenbill registered her second shutout of the season.

TEAM NOTES

Riise Equals WUSA Assists Mark: Courage midfielder Hege Riise has tied the WUSA all-time record for assists in one season with 10. Last season, Kristine Lilly of Boston and Sissi of San Jose each finished with 10 as well. Riise's assist tally last season was nine. There are eight regular season games remaining in the 2002 campaign.

Fotopoulos Chasing WUSA Points Lead: Forward Danielle Fotopoulos, who led the Courage in scoring last year, is currently second in the WUSA in scoring with eight goals and four assists. Tiffeny Milbrett, last season's WUSA MVP, holds the top spot with eight goals and seven assists.

Prinz Ripping It Up: Since Birgit Prinz's arrival, the Courage has been on a tear, going 5-1-1. Carolina's German striker has registered a goal or an assist in every game she has played. In seven matches, Prinz has recorded 6 goals and 4 assists, and is now ranks eighth in the WUSA in points scored. This week alone, Prinz has scored three goals and two assists in two games.

Courage Boasts WUSA's Top Offense: The Courage, who scored only 28 goals in all of 2001, has the WUSA most productive offense this season. Through twelve games, the Courage has scored a WUSA-high 27 goals. The Courage has three of the WUSA's top 10 scorers with Fotopoulos (2nd), Riise (tied 5th) and Prinz (tied for 8th).

Scoring Streaks: The WUSA's longest point-scoring streaks this season have the Courage written all over them. Hege Riise scored in seven straight games, from 4/27 to 6/15. Now Danielle Fotopoulos and Birgit Prinz have tied that mark and both of their streaks are still active at seven games.

Slaton Makes Case For Rookie Of The Year Honors: Courage defender Danielle Slaton has lived up to the mighty expectations that accompany being the #1 overall pick in the 2002 WUSA Draft. The U.S. National Team star has emerged as a vocal leader of a stingy Courage defense that has allowed only 1.31 goals per game. She has also energized the WUSA's most explosive offense, contributing three goals already in 13 games.

Road Warrriors: The Courage is the WUSA's only unbeaten road team, having gone 5-0-2 away from SAS Stadium.
