Morrisville, NC (May 24, 2003) - The defending WUSA champion Carolina Courage waived goalkeeper Meghann Burke today, promoting veteran backup Maite Zabala to a standard player contract. Burke cleared waivers and has become an unrestricted free agent.

Burke, 22, played one game for the Courage, starting the 2003 season opener in place of injured Courage keeper Kristin Luckenbill. She logged 90 minutes, making four saves and allowing two goals. A two-time C-USA Defensive Player of the Year, Burke was selected by the Courage in the second round (16th overall) in the 2003 WUSA Draft.

The Courage elevated the status of Maite Zabala, a veteran of two WUSA seasons, from developmental to standard player contract. Zabala, a first team All-Pac 10 selection at California, played in 2001 and 2002 with the Atlanta Beat and Philadelphia Charge, respectively.
